Dr. Oneeka Williams is a dynamic speaker. She speaks about literacy in the 21st century, about the love of learning and science, as well as about personal and public health issues.
A Harvard Medical School graduate, Dr. Williams ranks among the top urologic surgeons in the United States. A native of the Caribbean, she was born and raised in Guyana and moved with her family to Barbados at the age of 10. From an early age, her science teacher mother and journalist father instilled in her a love for the sciences and writing.
“My Dr. Dee Dee Dynamo children's book series is based upon my mission to not only promote literacy in science, but to present learning facts in a fun way. I also wanted to create a female action figure that brings strong, positive and powerful images for girls of all colors, and to present a counter narrative to some of the stereotypical images that we see of blacks in the media.”–Dr. Oneeka Williams

“STEM careers earn more, and as women are increasingly becoming more heads of households this creates greater flexibility, financial freedom, economic empowerment and overall health for them and their children. Girls need to see more examples of women in STEM fields and how having a career in a STEM field can fulfill all of the things that many of us identify as important.”–Dr. Oneeka Williams

(FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE–November 18, 2013–New York, NY)–Boston-based surgeon and author Dr. Oneeka Williams will be the featured speaker at the Rochdale Early Advantage Charter School (REACS) in Jamaica, New York, on November 22.
Dr. Williams, a Harvard Medical School graduate who ranks among the top urologic surgeons in the United States, is committed to inspiring all children, and especially girls, towards a greater interest in science, a positive attitude and the pursuit of excellence in all their endeavors.
Dr. Williams’ first children's book Dr. Dee Dee Dynamo's Mission to Pluto was published earlier this year, and her second children’s book Dr. Dee Dee Dynamo's Meteorite Mission is due out this Thanksgiving.
The Rochdale School will be observing a CAREER DAY on November 20, to be followed in two days by a DR. DEE DEE DYNAMO DAY on November 22. All students will receive copies of the book and will wear a special Dr. Dee Dee Dynamo-emblazoned Tee Shirt. School administrators are looking forward to Dr. Williams’ appearance and have stated:
“We anticipate this being a wonderful learning experience for the children and our hope is that Dr. Williams will be able to inspire our college-bound students, Kindergarten–Grade 4, to think favorably about their education and what it takes to be all they can be."
REACS is committed to a balanced multi-literacy approach offering each student a challenging Early College Preparatory education that develops character and critical thinking ability infused with family and social values to support life-long learning, leadership and productive citizenship. The school aims to develop each student to "stand out from the crowd" intellectually, historically, culturally, digitally, economically, physically, artistically and civically, in an increasingly diverse and fast-changing global society.
